Rio Grande Theater:
211 N Main St, Las Cruces, NM 88001

Join the University Art Museum for free screenings of “Juan Quezada: Pioneer Potter of Mata Ortiz'' by Dina Perlasca and “The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz” by Scott Peterson at the Rio Grande Theater, April 5, 2024 at 6pm, presented in conjunction with the UAM’s newest exhibition Mata Ortiz: Highlights from the Lysbeth Warren Anderson Collection. Both films feature testimonials from Juan Quezada and offer insight into the history and legacy of Mata Ortiz pottery.

Juan Quezada: Pioneer Potter of Mata Ortiz documents one of the last recorded interviews before Juan Quezada’s passing in 2022. A leader in his community, Quezada was credited and celebrated for pioneering the resurgence of traditional Casas Grandes and Paquimé pottery that evolved into the remarkable Mata Ortiz style.

The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz tells the improbable story of how Quezada (without a kiln or a potter’s wheel and using only found materials) and MacCallum both experienced creative and personal breakthroughs which led to dazzling, innovating works by Quezada and a passing of the torch to younger, award-winning artists such as Diego Valles.
